Fever, Chills, Body & Muscle Aches

Influenza, also known as the flu, is spread by touching infected surfaces and close contact with infected persons. You can spread the flu to your family and friends before you show any symptoms. The Flu is caused by a virus that lives in micro-droplets. These droplets are sprayed everywhere when you cough or sneeze. They stick to hands, countertops, door handles and just about any hard surface. The best way to avoid catching or spreading the virus is frequent or regular hand washing or sanitizing. If you have to cough or sneeze, do so into your arm or wear a mask to avoid spreading it to others.

The Flu is not the same as a cold. Although both can cause cough, runny nose, sore throat and fever, people with the Flu usually complain more about Fever, Chills, Fatigue, Muscle or Body Aches and Headaches. Unlike the common cold, the flu can cause serious health problems such as sinus infections, pneumonia, dehydration or even death.

Most people will get the flu and recover with no problems. However, children and the elderly are at greatest risk for developing complications. Those with other health problems are also at greater risk.

I’m healthy, so why should I bother?

A principle called herd immunity means that the flu vaccine works best when everyone gets the shot. Think of a diamond that is completely surrounded by police. If every officer has protection, there is no way for a thief to get to the diamond. However, if one officer is unprotected, the surrounding ring now has a weak link and the thief breaks through, compromising everybody. So if you choose not to get the flu shot, you are choosing not to protect everyone around you, including loved ones.

The best way to stay healthy this season is to get your flu shot early, before mid November. It takes about two weeks for antibodies to develop in your body to protect you against the flu. Flu shots cannot give you the flu because the vaccine contains killed or weakened virus pieces.

The flu virus changes often, so you need to get a flu shot every year. It’s easy and it’s free. Everyone should get the flu shot. Talk to your health care provider for more information. Flu Vaccine for Children

Flu vaccine is recommended for infants 6 months of age and over.

The National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) prefers FluMist® for use in healthy children 2 to 5 years of age. FluMist® is given as a nasal spray. FluMist® is not publicly funded in Ontario, and requires a prescription. The cost is about $30. The free flu vaccine that is given in the arm at clinics is still safe and works in children.
